吉姆 JIM HOFMAN | Photography Faces & places in China

Shopping in Yangjiang

I arrived in Yangjiang a couple days ago and needed to do some grocery shopping.  I decided to take some camera gear to the store to document the local flavor.  Some indoor street photography on a hot Sunday afternoon.

I had a bit of a situation entering the store when the security lady wanted to lock my camera bag & camera in a secure pouch.  They must have a shoplifting problem, so if you bring a purse or bag to the store it has to get stored in a big zipper bag that gets sealed with security tag.  She wanted me to put my camera in the bag also, which didn’t make much sense – and would have ended my plan to take photos in the store.  I argued using my crappy Chinese and I think she just gave up.  Another successful negotiation using bad Chinese.

Considering it’s a communist country, China is sure starting to look like the US.  Consumerism or Communism?  A fine line these days.
